Genevieve Lakey is a lawyer with experience in both commercial and workplace law with an interested assisting start-up businesses.

She has worked on a range of commercial matters, including advising and drafting commercial agreements and assisting in commercial litigation, and has been involved in briefing junior and senior counsel. Genevieve has also worked on a number of workplace matters relating to commencing employment, restraint of trade, misconduct allegations and unfair dismissals.

Genevieve’s particular interest is partnering with small or growing businesses to provide comprehensive advice in relation to:

  • Business structuring
    Providing advice about types of business structures including asset protection, tax implications and the early investor incentive scheme.
  • IP rights and protections
    Assessing the IP the company has and whether it is appropriately protected (trade mark and enforcement of IP rights).
  • Employment
    Drafting employment agreements, policies and procedures, confidentiality agreements and assisting in legal matters relating to cessation of employment (including deeds of release, non-disclosure agreements) and disputes in the Fair Work Commission and the Federal Circuit Court.
  • Contracts
    Shareholder agreements, supply agreements, terms and conditions of sale and requirements of standard form contracts for both consumers and small businesses, licencing agreements and the sale or purchase of a business.

Genevieve recognises that there are several ways to achieve a desired outcome and is ready to adapt to a client’s immediate needs while recognising future issues. She is proficient in French, Spanish and German.


  • Drafting suites of workplace policies;
  • Drafting share sale and shareholder agreements;
  • Defending an IP infringement proceeding in regard to the copyright of a packaging layout where the goods in question had been imported from China;
  • In India assisting in IP enforcement where local manufacturers falsely used international brand names damaging the brand name.
Genevieve completed her Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne in 2014, where she also completed her Bachelor of Arts with majors in French and Spanish. In 2014 she undertook a legal internship in New Delhi, India practising in the area of Intellectual Property as well as completing 'Chinese Law and Legal Institutions' at EUCPL in Shanghai.
