David De Alwis spends his time helping families through a focus on compassionate, commercial family law advice or  support around migration.

Family law is the core of David’s practice and he handles a wide variety of matters ranging from the most complex parenting and property matters (including matters which have run to appeal before the Full Court of the Family Court of Australia) to every day disputes. His desire  is to help his clients move on with their lives in the quickest, dignified and most cost-effective way following a separation. If a matter needs to go to Court David has great skill in preparing his client’s case thoroughly and can recommend a barrister who will properly argue the case.

David’s particular interest is in acting in matters involving:

  • The Hague Convention on International Child Abduction;
  • Relocation (both interstate and overseas);
  • Matters involving tracing of funds dissipated unilaterally by one spouse;
  • Matters in which one spouse is a bankrupt.

David is sensitive to people with various different needs and of different backgrounds and his Sri Lankan heritage gives him a special understanding of issues facing clients with an Asian heritage. David also has a working knowledge of Sinhalese.

David is also a Registered Migration Agent (MARN 1683083) and is able to deal with a wide variety of matters from the most straight forward to the most complex (including appeals to the High Court of Australia).

For private clients, he provides advice around the various classes of visas available to foreign nationals, and he helps them to build effective migration strategies. His business clients rely on him to formulate migration solutions that help them with short/long term labour shortages.
